Do you own a drop-side crib? If so, you need to pay attention to this recent product recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced yesterday that Child Craft Industries, Inc. is recalling its line of drop-side cribs due to entrapment, suffocation, and fall hazards (three terrifying words if you are the parent of a baby or toddler).
This recall affects more than 2.2 million cribs. Since 2000, there have been 32 documented deaths, and in a recent interview, CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum referred to these drop-side cribs as a "deadly hazard." The cribs are no longer in stores, and lawmakers are pursuing initiatives to ban these cribs altogether.
For a list of affected cribs, visit the CPSC here. These cribs were sold at Babies R Us, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, and other retail locations between January 2000 and July 2009.
Under no circumstances should you try to fix these cribs - babies have died as a result of attempted repairs. As soon as you can, find a new sleeping arrangement for your baby, and avoid using cribs that are more than a decade old.
The CPC has photos of how these cribs may harm your child. Although a doll was used for reenactment purposes, the photos are not for the squeamish.
Please pass this information along to fellow parents.
